Bacteria Rhodoferax ferrireducens and Geobacter metallireducens are used in microbial fuel cells (MFC) to break down organic wastes (in domestic wastewater) and to convert them into electricity and hydrogen. Bacteria living on the anode break down organic compound, and separate electron from protons. The electrons travel via the wire while the protons diffuse through the electrolyte. This study was carried out on a laboratory scale. However, converting into commercial use poses a challenge for the researchers. MFCs could become an alternative energy source, thereby reducing the problem of dwindling resources and pollution problems (Environmental Health Perspectives vol. 113 (11), 2005).
